Rediscovering The Admiral Mann for the Kentish Town community

In 2014, The Admiral Mann ceased operations when the former owners sold the pub to Woodham Properties Ltd.
Fast forward 10 years, and the former pub has remained unoccupied.

Now, under new ownership, the team want to re-open The Admiral Mann
in a manner that is in keeping with it's history, fit for the future needs of the Kentish Town community.

The Admiral Mann:
Quick History

Side by side photo of The Admiral Mann in Kentish Town, Camden. The photo of the left shows the pub in its historic context and the photo on the right shows the pub in its current state boarded up and in disrepair.

The pub was originally built in 1881, becoming part of the McMullen's family brewery in 1923. The pub itself withstood the Zeppelin airship attacks of World War I and the onslaught of the Blitz.

In 2014, when the property was sold, it was listed as an Asset of Community Value for 5 years by Camden Council and there was an active campaign locally to save it from development.

For the past 10 years the former pub has remained boarded up.

The Admiral Mann & Hargrave Place:
A New Development

The property includes a three-storey locally listed building with a basement for beer storage. Connected to it is another building with storage on the ground floor. The upper floors were previously staff accommodation without community use.

The plans include modernising of the ground floor. The basement will remain as storage due to height restrictions. The ground floor will be refurbished with fully accessible WC and a small kitchenette.

A new internal staircase will be relocated towards the existing residential entrance providing direct access from street level and creating better reconfiguration of the ground floor space.

The team are also considering external landscaping of the frontage to offer occasional use for pop-up events, community markets and other outdoor activities.

Led by James West, the consultation will involve local residents, businesses and people with an interest in the area.

THE CONSULTATION

The consultation ran for six weeks from 24 May to 5 July 2024.

The aim of the consultation was to better understand what local residents and local businesses think The Admiral Mann should be like to make it as relevant today as it was for its previous operating years.

There were various ways for everyone to participate in the consultation:

  • Completing the online survey
  • Attending a drop-in event at Torriano Meeting House
  • Directly by submitting a comment

Some of the questions that needed answering:

  • What made The Admiral Mann special and how can these characteristics best be retained?

  • Which aspects of pub culture matter the most to the current residents and businesses of Kentish Town?

  • How can The Admiral Mann be sustained to avoid a need for future closure, like so many pubs in the area?

  • Is there anyone locally who would consider operating The Admiral Mann as a community run pub?

  • Are there any social enterprises or businesses who would run the pub with a strong community focus?

THE CONSULTATION HAS NOW CONCLUDED:
